Group Therapy

Group Therapy is a cost effective approach to learning about one’s strengths and weaknesses regarding how you manage relationships; how you make friends; and how you might distance people. A group offers the rare opportunity to receive feedback about how others perceive you. Groups also afford the individual the opportunity to practice a new behavior in a safe setting. It is immediately effective for creating a supportive network since other members of the group are present essentially for similar issues. It is an excellent opportunity to observe how you relate to others. Communication skills are developed such that listening and responding to others is practiced.

Groups are comprised of individuals within a similar age range, and include both men and women. Dr. Grabau’s groups are not topic specific; instead they focus on what the participants need in terms of their personal growth and prosperity. Potential group members tend to feel isolated, and misunderstood in their private life. They may have disappointments in their background that involve important losses or absences of key individuals.

Groups offered by Dr. Grabau are typically comprised of approximately seven members. Joining a therapy group requires an initial interview with Dr. Grabau. The initial interview offers the opportunity to have questions answered and for Dr. Grabau to determine if the right fit exists between the existing group members and the potential new member.

The Life-Style Weight Loss Group (LWL) explores the role that food has in one’s life currently and historically. This group meets regularly as a support group, a therapy group, and an educational group. A minimum six month commitment is necessary.
