Bipolarity

What Does Bipolar Disorder Therapy Look Like?

It is common to first prescribe a client medication once they are diagnosed. Medication is an effective form of treatment for someone who has bipolar disorder, but not as a stand-alone form of treatment.

Therapy, along with medication, has been proven to be effective in the treatment and management of bipolar disorder symptoms. Therapy can be beneficial to help the individual find healthy coping skills and responses to life stressors.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can aid the client in identifying negative thought patterns that are leading to unhealthy behaviors and responses. We can not simply start by trying to change the behavior, we have to first address the negative thought patterns in order to have a positive change to the behavior.

Other modalities of therapy have been proven to be effective such as mindfulness-based techniques which have been proven to be an effective tool in reducing stress and is especially effective in the treatment for someone diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Mindfulness simply means to focus intentionally, in the present moment, without judgment. This allows us to find a sense of connectivity to ourselves and our surroundings while enhancing psychological and emotional resilience.

You can also expect the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Wellness Coaching throughout the process of your treatment.

The goal of bipolar disorder therapy is to help you find acceptance in your diagnosis, find healthy, positive ways of coping, and practice emotional responses that allow you to thrive in life! Your therapy treatment can be effective if you are willing and committed to the process and open to the possibility of change!
